And on the 8th day we cried….

Monday, 29. December 2008 8:52

…”WE HAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE RENO”

Picture it, slumbering peacefully, warm and snuggled in our beds.

“WHAAAAH  WHAAAAAAH WHAAAAAAAH WHAAAAAAAAH! [strobe light] Warning, Warning, Warning, please evacuate the building…”

Down ELEVEN FLIGHTS OF STAIRS at 7:15 in the morning.  It’s 27* outside people.  We just got out of warm beds, that makes it at least the equivalent of negative 60 doesn’t it???!!!

It couldn’t have been that bad, because when I ventured down the way to the entrance next to the fire engine, housekeeping was vacuuming the lobby and the gamblers were still snuggled safe in front of their video poker machines.

Good times, people!

And on the 7th day…

Sunday, 28. December 2008 13:36

…we almost lost our room.

Last night, Linda and I were doing our read-aloud and decided that it was about time to go to bed (it was around 12:45).  We heard people in the hallway and I could swear it sounded like someone was trying to get in our room.  We eventually decided that the rooms were so close together that we were just hearing the neighbors.  We turned the light out and a few minutes later the phone rang.  “Hello, this is the front desk.  Can you please tell me who is occupying this room?”  We identified ourselves and the man at the front desk sounded a little like he was going to have a meltdown of epic proportions!  “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I don’t know what happened.  It shows you as checked out.  I’m sorry.”

Apparently, for one reason or another, they randomly checked us out and then gave our room away while we were STILL IN IT.  Thank goodness we had the deadbolt on the door.  Can you imagine the panic that would have ensued had they actually entered the room? Heh….

Merry Christmas!

Friday, 26. December 2008 15:04

We got some snow for Christmas.  Here’s a picture from our hotel room.

It was cold, but the snow hasn’t stayed on the ground, there’s maybe an inch or so.

This is Chris’s famous resting pose. Since he can’t put any weight on his ankle yet (another 2 weeks) he uses a walker.  We tried crutches, but that’s going to take some practice!

Yesterday was the FIRST day we have NOT gone to Walmart.  It seems like every day we had to make a trip.  One day we decided to branch out and try Target.  I used my GPS to find the nearest one, and while we found the location…Target was no longer there, closed and abandoned…

On the 4th day….

…we almost died!

Can I Offer You a Continental Breakfast?
I’m not one to pass up free food.  I’m not a big breakfast eater but our hotel offers a free continental breakfast and, you know, we figured it would be bagels and the likes.  Yesterday we decided to head down and have a little something.  The pastries looked dry, the fruit looked fair at best, there was bread for toast, oatmeal and assorted juices.

I picked up a couple of pastries, some toast, a little cantaloupe and honeydew and some apple juice.  Linda got a couple of pastries, some cantaloupe and honeydew, oatmeal and milk.  The butter for the toast was unsalted, what’s the point of that?  The melon was not ripe, such that is was very crunchy.  I took a drink of my apple juice and thought, “hmmm…that’s odd” and took another drink.  I offered a taste to Linda, “taste this, i think it’s poison.”  Yep sure enough, fermented.  Yeah, I thought maybe Reno offers beer for breakfast…  Linda’s oatmeal was mushy and gross.  She tried to eat a little and then just decided to be done with it.  At least she had a big glass of milk to wash everything down.  GULP.  GAG.  Sour.

This is the calibur of the hotel we’re staying at.  I know, you’re jealous.

Greetings From Reno, NV

Wednesday, 24. December 2008 13:41

It’s currently 33* here in Reno with snow expected to start by 5:00pm.

My best friend Linda’s family was in a car accident while traveling from Arizona to Washington for Thanksgiving.  They hit a six point buck at full highway speed.  The buck’s head wrapped around the passenger side and crashed through the window and hit Linda’s sister in the face.  JC and Christopher had the worst of the injuries.  JC is out and in rehab after breaking her back but is back and school and doing very well.  Christopher is still in ICU while his intestines and bowels heal.  He was sitting in the middle back and the lap-belt perforated his bowel and he broke his ankle.  He’s had many surgeries, feeding tubes, pokes and prods but is doing well.

His last meal was November 21st and was a TRIPLE WHOPPER.  (bleck!)  Yesterday was the first time he’s been able to have anything.  Yay for Apple Juice!

Heavenly Apple Juice

Post Apple Juice Euphoria!

It’s Christmas Eve and we’re here watching The Chronicles of Riddick with Christopher.
